September 07, 2017

The Institute of Marine Research in Norway has agreed to conduct an investigation on the marine resources of Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Sri Lanka. The investigations will be conducted in collaboration with NARA and the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. In 1979 and 1980, the Fridtjof Nansen Advanced Research Vessel has conducted an investigation of similar nature in the EEZ of Sri Lanka. The said vessel will be visiting Sri Lanka again in June next year for the investigation.

The data collected in 1979 and 1980 will be updated and new researches will be conducted under this investigation. Additionally, capacity building project for NARA is also planned to be conducted in line with the investigation. Sri Lankan scientists are to be participated in this investigation and it will provide them a valuable opportunity to improve their skills and capabilities.

Investigations will be carried out to obtain recommendations regarding the fish density and future harvesting potentials of EEZ, the seasonal changes affecting marine resources, bounteous fishing grounds and suitable fishing gear within the EEZ. Also, the investigation will look into the unutilized and underutilized marine resources within the EEZ of Sri Lanka.
