Welcome! says Nuwara Eliya. The most beautiful hill city of Sri Lanka. She had been baptized as “Little England” “City of Lights” “Garden City” a chilly city near the equator, foot of Mount Pidirutalagala, the highest peak of Sri Lanka in one side, and to the south world’s End where there is a sudden drop in the terrain of several thousand feet. In the middle the beauty “Nuwara Eliya” situated embracing gardens of flowers, water falls and blanket of tea bushes.
It’s climatic condition soothers ones brain vessels, eyes and the whole human body. The best period is from March to June. Foreigners and locals when Colombo is warm and humid flock towards upcountry to relish the salubrious natures gifted cool climate and pleasant atmosphere and its beauty.
Dear visitor, a tourist or a local, the days are on, City of Nuwara Eliya is in her best attire awaiting to bosom you. As you pass Kandy, few miles you enter the city of Nuwara Eliya. On your way, one would find pictorial beauty, mountain ranges covered with carpets of green tea, up above blue skies, misty veils surrounding the ranges, as you take a turn, a white frilly veil of a water fall splashing on the rocks, meadows, white tea factories, either sides of the roads wild flowers smiling towards the road, at certain areas lines of cypress trees, Cedars, pines and oak. At hair pin bends you find little flower girls carrying poesy of flowers, every hair pin bend you find the same girl trying to stop your vehicle to sell flowers, which you will have no mercy but to buy the poesy.
What beauty is it! No sound, no noise calmness and the chilly winds wishing welcome, either sides of the road wild flowers blooming, scattered bushes of dark purple wild berries, its grandeur, cannot be expressed by words, Sri Lankans are proud of this nature’s treasure which brings in dollars from other countries.
Squads of tea pluckers move through rows of bushes, at a distance they look like colourful dolls in a green velvet.
For Westerners arriving to Sri Lanka to evade snowing winter, can have a fabulous enjoyment with her scenic beauty and tasting luscious fruits and Sri Lankan delicacies in many of the hotels and guest houses in Nuwara Eliya. Nuwara Eliya is famous for its English style bungalows, vegetables, crispy salad leaves, lettuces straw berries and variety of roses and many more nature oriented beauties.
Now most of the floral gardens in Nuwara Eliya have started to grow vegetables as the Government has stretched hands to assist in “Grow More” campaign. Therefore, in some of the mountain ranges you find largely grown vegetable beds, which are sold fresh to the hotels and guests. Since of late red straw berry orchards have led to earn foreign currency.
Addition to scenic beauty, she offers many activities for tourists and locals, golfing, horse riding, boating, hiking and landscaped floral gardens, plateaus, valleys, English style bungalows. Surely, it is a “Little England”.
Hakgala Gardens is a delightful garden over 27 hectares famed for its roses, ferns and medicinal plants. In spring and summer all variety of colourful flowers tints the greeny bushes. The beauty is beyond expression. One would presume he had entered a fairy land. Flowers all over, lines of roses, daffodils, carnations, dahlias etc. You are surrounded only with flowers, and clean summer houses to relax. The oldest tea bush is still surviving in the gardens. Photographs could be taken above flower beds, under the rows of flowers or either sides as mementos.
Victoria Park is 27 acres. Nanu Oys flows through the park and number of lakes within enhances its beauty. Rare bird species are found flying freely in the park. This Park too is filled with colourful glory of flowers. A great tourist attraction within city limits.
Hortonplains National Park and highest plateau grassland interspersed with patches of forest, paradise for nature lovers for hikers and bird watching. Plains are a beautiful, silent a strange world with some excellent walks. Grassy plains and Sambars, leopards are seen in late evenings and early mornings. This plateau ends at the foot of worlds’ end.
Adam’s Peak(Sri Pada) too is visible in the mountain ranges, if any person wants to visit, from Nuwara Eliya it is quite a close proximity.
Gregory lake adds flavour to the beauty. Now it has turned out to be a place for water sports and boat yard for boating and rowing.
Galway’s Land Bird sanctuary area covers 57.6 hectares gazetted as a bird sanctuary. 20 species of foreign birds and 30 species of Sri Lankan birds paints the area.
Other than the scenic beauty tea factories viz.Watawala Plantations,St.Clair’s Tea Centre are famous places where doors are opened for tourists and locals, to observe how tea leaves from bushes put into machines and finally how a packet of tea packed in a box. The flavour is excellent. You are served with a hot cup of tea fresh from machines.
The famous water falls one could see are Rawana falls, Lassapana falls, Bamura Ella falls, Devon falls, Ramboda Falls, and St Clares falls, are precious places of Sri Lanka. Pure crystal waters flow down for the blessed Sri Lankans to quench their thirst and vegetation.
Golf club beautifully kept, water –in the form of rivers and streams – comes into play on six holes altogether 18 hole course,which is world famous and a well maintained terrace.
Horse races in Sri Lanka is seen in the season. Turf Club sponsors horse races . Most important event is Governor’s cup race which is held annually in April.
Climbing Pidrutalagala is another interesting adventurers place. On top stands the Island’s main TV transmission tower and the peak is out of bounds to the public. There are a few leopards on the mountain. For mountain hikers the best time is from early morning but by evening must come down. If camping you must be ready with proper weapons.
Lodging apart grand hotels, viz.Amaya, hotel, Heritance Tea Factory hotel, Jetwing hotel,Grand hotel are few of the three and four star hotels for tourists and there are a few budget hotels. You’ll need blankets to keep warm at night.. Another way of keeping warm is to get a fire lit in your room. Make sure the room has ventilation or an open window or you may get carbon monoxide poisoning.
