Minister of National Heritage D.E. W. Gunasekara said in Parliament (24) that 1381 persons have been arrested in connection with treasure hunting and selling of artifacts.
42 Buddha images, 3 Gods’ statues and 8 other valuable treasure articles have been recovered during the arrest while 360 archeological thefts, 251 destruction of archeological sites and 557 illegal excavations have been taken place from the year 2005, Minister noted.
The Officer-in-charge of Archeological site has made a complaint on the incident that took place in Vilachchi recently, Minister pointed.
