Update: The HIV test for prison inmates has been commenced on 12th, says Dr. Nimal Edirisinghe, Director of HIV Prevention Unit.
However, no blood sample was taken without the consent of the prisoner while 230 inmates were given blood samples after referring them to HIV Aids Prevention Unit by Commissioner General of Prisons.The reports on tests will be issued shortly, director of said.
All suspects and inmates in prisons will be subject to blood and medical tests in future under a programme implemented with the assistance of Ministry of Health, Prison sources said.
Measures were initiated following the detection of AIDS patient in Welikada Prisons last week. The prisoner had died due to complications of HIV/AIDS.
The Addl. Magistrate of Colombo has directed the Welikada Prison authorities to carry out a check on prison inmates of a certain ward at the prisons for HIV/AIDS.
