Minister of Health, Maitripala Sirisena who called for an emergency meeting of Presidential Task Force on Dengue Prevention to address the rising dengue cases and deaths in the country declared a Dengue Prevention Month effecting from 25th June to 25th July.
The meeting was to determine whether there are any lapses in preventive measures initiated by Health Ministry to control the disease and to take appropriate measures to eradicate the menace.
According to Epidemiology Unit, 12,165 dengue cases and 65 deaths were reported. Out of the 65 deaths, 25 have been reported from Colombo District while Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital is overcrowded with dengue suspected patients numbering to more than 3,000 .
Health officials have sought the help of media to warn public of the resurgence of the mosquito borne menace and to educate the importance of prevention and spread of epidemic disease. They also request public to take adequate measures to eradicate dengue mosquito breeding centres.
