Asylum seekers’ vessel believed to be from Sri Lanka carrying nearly 200 people has capsized off Christmas Island today (21) with an unknown number of survivals.
According to reports, the vessel has capsized between Australia and Indonesia, the Authorities have said.
Australia Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has said the ill fated vessel has issued a distress call mid afternoon and capsized about 120 Nautical Miles North of the Indian Ocean Territory.
It is said that the accident could become one of the worst refugee vessel disaster off Australia for more than a decade.
The authorities have confirmed of survivors but could not confirm number of them at this stage, an AMSA spokeswoman has told AFM.
