Delay in inter monsoon rains disrupts power generation – MPE

alt Ministry of Power and Energy announced that country is experiencing a severe water shortage due to non-receipt of inter monsoon rains for three consecutive times for the first time in the history.

At present country is not having sufficient quantity of drinking water as well as water for agricultural purposes, Ministry pointed out.

The hydro-power contribution which stood at 100% in the year 1995 has drastically dropped to 13% by now.

However, Ministry announced, that despite low contribution of hydro power generation, country’s energy requirements will be met through high costly diesel power stations.

He said that the Ministry is aware of discussions held recently between Canada and the Bahamas on the Commonwealth summit to be held in Sri Lanka.
