President instructs to prevent deforestation and reconstructing tanks in up country

altHis Excellency the president Mahinda Rajapaksa instructed relevant State officials to take stern and immediate action against the forest destroyers who fell down trees for timber smuggling and engage in  wild animal hunting.
 
President also directed officials to take measures to prevent deforestation of forests  which feed the natural water bodies and  construct reservoirs for agricultural purposes in up country.
 
Addressing the Development Committee meeting in Badulla district, President call on Police, Forest Conservation and Wild Life Departments to act collectively to achieve the objectives of forest conservation and preventing the fire eruptions in forests.
 
President further directed District Secretary to compile a report on water resources available in the area and to declare those ‘water feeding areas’ as “Environmentally Sensitive Zones”
 
Plans to build reservoirs in Thalpitiya and Moneragala to irrigate  28,000 acres of land, expediting the construction work of  Uma Oya multipurpose project and reconstruction of the Willuwa Tank, and completion of Upper Uva Water Conservation Project were among the others priorities discussed at the meeting.
 
President also declared open the new seven storied building with modern equipment and facilities constructed to house District Secretariat in Badulla at a cost of 3.3. billion rupees.
 
President will also chair the Monaragala district development committee today.
