Statue Of Liberty Mysteriously Goes Dark

A portion of Lady Liberty mysteriously went dark save for the iconic colossal's torch and crown on Tuesday night.

The statue was cast in darkness for at least an hour around 11 p.m. and even the National Park Service seemed perplexed by the New York harbor’s black void.

“Some lights on the Statue were temporarily off tonight,” a spokesman for the Statue of Liberty National Monument tweeted. “Likely related to new emergency generator/Hurricane Sandy recovery project work.”

The park added that it would confirm the cause of the blackout when crews return to Liberty Island on Wednesday morning.

The lights turned back on just after midnight.

A Twitter account for the Women’s March movement theorized that the lights were flipped to symbolize Wednesday's call-to-action "Day Without a Women," which encourages women to skip work, refuse to shop and wear red.
