Sri Lankan Opposition Leader's Humble, Two-room Apartment

Two journalists attached to the Ravaya newspaper (Tharindu Uduwaragedara and Indunil Usgodaarachchi) have published some pictures of Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan's humble apartment in Colombo.

Although he was appointed as the Opposition Leader nine months ago, Sampanthan, a veteran politician representing the Trincomalee district, still lives in own apartment in Colombo, without occupying the Opposition Leader's official residence.

The Opposition Leader's apartment, according to the two journalists, is on the third floor of the housing complex which does not even have an elevator.

They said six people, including the security officers of the Opposition Leader and his immediate family members, occupied the two-room apartment.

The 83 year old politicians's Parliamentary career began in 1977 when he was elected as the MP for the Trincomalee seat. A lawyer by profession, Sampanthan became the leader of the Tamil National Alliance, Sri Lanka's largest Tamil political party, in 2001.
