Dinesh Weerakkody's Tryst With President: Maithri Holds Under The Radar Talks In China

Dinesh Weerakkody is no stranger to Sri Lankan political not only because he is the son-in-law of Minister John Amaratunga, but also because he is a close supporter of the green party.

It was no secret that he was one of the contenders for the post of Central Bank Governor after the election victory of Maithripala Sirisena. Much to his disappointment, Arjuna Mahendran was handpicked by Prime Minister Wickremesinghe for the same post.

Interestingly, Weerakkody, is now in the process of developing close links with President Maithripala Sirisena. He, in an interesting turn of events, left for China last week, a day after President Sirisena visited the country.

Weerakkody stayed at the same hotel where the president was staying and returned to the country a day before the president’s return. It is learnt that he has held some under-the-radar discussions with President Maithripala Sirisena while they were in China.

This is significant in the light of the recent controversy on Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran’s role in the Treasury bond issue by the bank in February.

This also comes in the wake of the reports that the three member committee appointed to investigate the issue has recommended that the incident ‘warrants an investigation'.

Although it is still too early to say that Weerakkody is eying for the much-coveted position again, one can come to the assumption that the young banker is getting ready for a "big move".
