CEA 'Temporarily' Stays Suspension Of Coca-cola EPL

The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) today backtracked on its earlier decision and temporarily revoked the suspension imposed on the Environmental Protection Licence (EPL) of the Coca-Cola beverage factory.

The factory’s EPL was suspended by the Authority last week after oil from the factory was leaked into the Kelani River. This forced the water supply to be restricted to Colombo, Kotte and Dehiwela-Mt Lavinia on two occasions during this month.

CEA Chairman Prof. Lal Mervin Dharmasiri told media that the Company had undertaken to prevent such incidents from happening.

CEA officials inspected the factory and the affected area before revoking the suspension, he added. However, he insisted that the revoke is only for a short period of time.

The CEA will keep inspecting the process of the measures taken by the factory, Prof. Dharmasiri said.
