Top Trade Union Leaders To Be Prosecuted Under Contempt Of Court Charges

Top trade unions leaders in the health and education sector in the country are likely to be prosecuted under contempt of Court charges.

The Slave Island police complained to Colombo Fort Magistrate that three trade union leaders Saman Ratnapriya, Joseph Stalin and R.B. Sirisena had disregarded a Court order issued against them not to take part in a May Day rally at the Hyde Park ground in Colombo and the adjacent streets.

Police alleged that they tend to criticize the Court order when attempted to enter towards the Hyde Park grounds through the Union place and informed Court that they could be charged under contempt of Courts. Accordingly three trade union leaders were noticed to appear in Court on June 2.

The Colombo Fort Magistrate prevented the May Day rally of the Joint Trade Unions alliance on the grounds that the BOC Workers Unions had reserved the Hyde Park first for a May Day rally on the same day.
