IUSF Did Not Reject Negotiations With Higher Education Minister: Weerasekara

December 01, 2015

The Convener of the Inter University Students Federation Lahiru Weerasekara on Monday (30) refuted certain reports that claimed the IUSF refused to negotiate with the Higher Education Minister and other relevant authorities

Speaking with Asian Mirror, Weerasekara said that the authorities agreed to give a time for a meeting on the last day of the protest march of the IUSF, which was held between November 23 to November 27.

The authorities also said that they can officially invite the IUSF for a meeting with the higher education minister after the protest march, most probably within this week, Weerasekara asserted. Therefore, the students agreed to the second option the authorities given, he added.

However, there has been no official invitation for a meeting yet, he told.

When asked about the future plans of IUSF over the issue of SAITM campus, Malabe, Weersekara said that they would consider about further actions after attending proposed discussions with authorities.

“We urge the government to close the SAITM immediately. After that government should consider about what they are going to do with that campus. The government should give proper and fair solution for the students who are currently studying at the SAITM,” Weerasekara stressed.

Moreover, the IUSF is not against for establishing new universities, he said. But the degrees they offer should not be based on the money factor, Weerasekara added.
