Champika And Sobhitha Thera Discuss Abolition Of Executive Presidency

Abolition of Executive Presidency alone will not solve burning issues of the country, JHU stalwart Minister Patalie Champika Ranawakahas has told Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera, Convener of the Movement for a Just Society.

The two parties met today in Colombo to discuss the key matters concerning the country's politics at this juncture.

"Singling out Executive Presidency and abolishing it could lead to an anarchist state. Any new change should be comprehensive. It should look into the electoral system of the country, setting up of Elections Commission, strengthening the Bribery Commission, reducing the Cabinet and curtailing its powers and the system of Provincial Council which was forced upon Sri Lanka," the Minister has told Sobhitha Thera.

The meeting came in a context whether Sobitha Thera's name had been proposed as the Common Candidate of the opposition at the forthcoming Presidential Election.

When contacted by Asian Mirror, a senior Cabinet Minister holding a top post in the UPFA said the ruling coalition got to know about the meeting through media.

"JHU might be an independent party. But it is also a coalition partner of the government. They need to act, bearing the collective responsibility in mind," the Minister said.

The Minister has not taken part in the weekly cabinet meeting since the enactment of the much debated Strategic Development Act.
