Ranil To Further Consolidate Powers Under UNP Constitutional Amendments

December 27, 2015

The United National Party leader Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will further consolidate his under proposed amendments to the party constitution, top UNP sources said on Sunday.

"When the UNP was in opposition, certain powers previously placed under the party leader were devolved between the Deputy Leader and the Leadership Council. Therefore, with the proposed amendments to the party constitution, the party leader will regain his lost authority," a senior Parliamentarian, who holds a key position in the party, told Asian Mirror.

At the same time, he said, several MPs will be appointed to new positions, based on their 'performance' at the recently held Parliamentary election.

Addressing a press conference last week, UNP General Secretary Kabir Hashim last week confirmed that the party would amend its constitution soon following a decision made by its Working Committee, last week.

He said some existing posts would be abolished, while the powers and titles of some posts would be revised during the amendment.

The General Secretary said the intention behind the constitutional amendment was to 'streamline' certain appointments.
