JHU To Decide On Warnasinghe's Resignation Today

December 29, 2015

Jathika Hela Urumaya Media Spokesman Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe stated that the JHU Central Committee will meet today to discuss the future steps to be taken regarding the defeat of his expenditure heads at the Western Provincial Council.

Speaking to Asian Mirror, Warnasinghe said that Chief Minister does not have any power to remove him from his position. If a Minister resigns, his portfolios are automatically transferred to the CM, he also pointed out.

If a Minister is to be removed, that should be done through a no-confidence motion, Warnasinghe also said.

Furthermore, there is no legal provision to take a vote for different expenditure heads, Warnasinghe added, pointing out that if any expenditure head is defeated, the budget is defeated as a whole.

Therefore, the Chief Minister should resign in the first place, Warnasinghe argued.

However, he also pointed out that the defeat of the budget will jeopardize all activities of the Provincial Council from January 1, imposing unnecessary difficulties to the people of the province. The party will also take this into consideration in taking a decision, he added.

The final decision on the matter will be conveyed to the public tomorrow or the day after, he also said.
