LTTE Commemoration Held In Jaffna University Despite Government's Assurance

Despite the government's assurance that no LTTE commemoration will be allowed to be held in the country, a LTTE memorial event was held in Jaffna University today.

State Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardena recently said that anyone holding a LTTE commemoration will have to face legal action. There was nothing against commemorating the relatives and the dead, but no commemoration of the LTTE will be allowed, he said.

However, the memorial held at Jaffna University showed the signs of a LTTE commemoration. A banner with a map of self-proclaimed Tamil Eelam and the official flower of the LTTE was also exhibited.

Several events to commemorate the war dead were held across the north and east, with the main event held at Mullivaikkal.
