September 28, 2016

the President pointed out the Right to Information Act is immensely important in this regard. Speaking further President Maithripala Sirisena pointed out journalists are entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring the Right to Information as well. A true media freedom cannot be enjoyed if the certain media institution only obeys the wishes of its owner.

Therefore journalists should be committed to provide accurate information to the public. The people not only have the right to know the information of the state sector, but also about the non governmental organizations. There are instances where certain NGOs are acting against the government and the expectations of the public.

Although many acts have been passed in the parliament from 1947, it is questionable whether the officials entrusted with the relevant responsibility are implementing them properly. The President also expressed belief that the process of Right to Information will ensure the good governance and curb the fraud and mal practices.
