Jaffna University Students Shooting: Five Arrested Policemen Granted Bail

Five policemen indicted and arrested for involvement in the shooting of two Jaffna University students were today granted bail.

The incident occurred at around 11.30 p.m. on October 20, 2016 when policemen opened fire at the two students for disobeying orders to stop at a police checkpoint.

The two students – Vijayakumar Sulakshan (24) and Nadarajah Gajan (23), third-year students at the University of Jaffna were returning home after an event.

In the wake of the incident officers from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Police were sent to Jaffna where they took five policemen into custody.
