Mahinda Deshapriya Threatens To Resign From Office If PC Elections Are Not Held Before November 10

Elections Commissions Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya today threatened to resign from office if the Provincial Council elections are not held before November 10.

Addressing a press conference in Colombo today, Dehsapriya said the PC elections should be held without further delay.

"Postponing elections is as bad as holding corrupt elections," Dehsapriya said, during the press conference.

The terms of six Provincial Councils have now expired, but the elections have been postponed indefinitely due to issues relating to the electoral system.

Deshapriya said he met both the President and the Prime Minister separately to discuss the delay. He added the Commission also held a meeting with representatives from all political parties.

Deshapriya also added that the people of the country have a responsibility to exert pressure on political parties hold elections without delay.
