FTA Between Sri Lanka And Singapore Will Remain Operational Until Two Parties Introduce Amendments With Mutual Consent

The Free Trade Agreement between Sri Lanka and Singapore still remains functional, informed sources within the Ministry of International Trade told Asian Mirror. 

They added that the original agreement signed between the two countries would remain operational, until the two parties introduce amendments to the agreement with mutual consent. 

It is learnt that Minister Malik Samarawickrama will present a Cabinet paper last week to appoint a committee to propose amendments to the FTA. 

Our sources added that final decisions have not been made so far on the composition on the committee. 

President Maithripala Sirisena, during his recent visit to Singapore, stressed the need for bring amendments to the agreement citing some "shortcomings" on Sri Lanka's part when drafting the FTA. 

The FTA between Sri Lanka and Singapore was the first comprehensive bilateral free trade agreement entered into by Sri Lanka in over 10 years.
