Dimuth Karunaratne Likely To Take Over Captaincy Of National Test Team: Chandimal To Be Axed Due To Poor Performance

February 05, 2019

Sri Lankan opener Dimuth Karunaratne will take over the captaincy of the Test team before the bilateral series against South Africa starting next week.

Karunaratne was selected as a member of the ICC World Test team for 2018 earlier this month and is currently the most consistent Sri Lankan batsman in the Test format.

Sri Lanka's regular Test captain Dinesh Chandimal is likely to lose captaincy as well as his place in the team due to poor performance during the Australian and New Zealand tours.

Head Coach Chandika Hathurusinghe is also on the firing line as he could not uplift the team performance during his 13-month sting with Sri Lanka Cricket.

Hathurusinghe, formerly the Head Coach of Bangladesh, is one of the highest paid coaches in the global Cricket arena.

Sri Lanka's former captain and senior player Angelo Mathews is likely to miss the Test series against South Africa due to his hamstring injury.

Mathews, however, is expected to join the team for the ODI series.
