JVP To Meet Prime Minister Tomorrow To Discuss 20th Amendment To The Constitution: UNP Positive About Full Abolition Of Executive Presidency

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) will meet Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in Parliament tomorrow to discuss the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, informed political sources said.

The 20th Amendment to the Constitution aims to fully abolish the Executive Presidency, which was introduced in 1978.

The UNP has so far expressed optimism about the 20th Amendment which seeks to fulfil a major campaign promise put forward by the party in the run up to the last Presidential election.

The JVP has already held discussions with Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) seeking to draw their support to the Amendment.

The discussion between the JVP and the TNA was highly successful with both parties agreeing to work as a common front to bring about political and constitutional reforms.

The JVP's discussion with Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa did not yield results as Rajapaksa fell short of assuring support for the 20th Amendment.

The 20th Amendment to the Consitution, which has already been presented to the House by a JVP MP as a private member bill, requires a 2/3 majority in Parliament.
