"I Have Already Decided On The Date On Which Death Penalty Will Be Implemented Against Drug Dealers": President Sirisena

President Maithripala Sirisena said he had already decided on the date on which the death penalty would be implemented.

Addressing a meeting yesterday, Sirisena said he was aware of the consequences of his battle against drug dealers, as the latter wielded enormous power over the country's political system.

The President also stated that the public, including prominent religious leaders, had extended support for his action against the drug menace.

He added that the drug dealers were powerful enough to topple governments in Sri Lanka and bring their 'friendly politicians' to power.

The President said his government was able to pass new legislation in Parliament against cigarettes and alcohol, demonstrating his commitment to save the country's youth from harmful elements.

Sirisena also added that he started his activism against narcotics when he was an opposition MP in the late 80s.
