President Sirisena Set To Declare Provincial Council Election In June Under Old Electoral System: Issues Between President And UNP Still Simmering

President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to declare the Provincial Council elections in June, this year, sources close to the President said.

They added that the Provincial Council election would take place under the old electoral system.

The Pronvincial Council elections have been delayed over issues relating to the delimitation process. A committee headed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is currently examining the issues in the delimitation process and possible corrective measures.

If the government decided to hold the PC election under the old electoral system, these delimitations issues will not come into play.

However, the President and the UNP are still not on the same page about holding the Provincial Council election under the old electoral system.

Although President Sirisena's supporters expected a "major annoucement" relating to an election on Monday (15), Sirisena did not make any drastic political move much to the disappointment of his camp.
