UNP Starts Under The Radar Talks On Common Candidate- Sajith Backs Down

The United National Party (UNP) has taken a new step in the direction of forming an opposition alliance by starting under-the-radar discussions with several political parties of the opposition about facing the next national level election.

The United National Party is now exploring the possibility of signing “Memorandums of Understanding” with other political parties and civil society organizations on how to contest a national level election and to interact with the consequent government.

The UNP is also expected to hold talks on this matter with political parties of minority communities and religious organizations. However, the Tamil National Alliance is yet to make a decision on the party it would support at the next presidential election.

Speaking to Asian Mirror, a UNP Spokesman said the party had presented its operational plan to certain civil organizations as a prelude to discussions.

The discussions will primarily be based on abolition of executive presidency, eliminating corruption, alleviation of poverty and ensuring economic development.

However, it is learnt that former Deputy Leader of the UNP Sajith Premadasa has distanced himself from the ongoing discussions on fielding a common candidate. He has said he would only support a presidential candidate fielded by the United National Party under the symbol 'elephant'.
