President Sirisena Convenes Cabinet Meeting After Two Weeks Amidst Severe Pressure From Government Members Against His Conduct

President Maithripala Sirisena today presided over a Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Secretariat, after a hiatus of two weeks.

Sirisena previously said he would not summon the weekly Cabinet meeting unless the Parliamentary Select Committee probing the Easter Sunday explosion is suspended.

However, the Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, said it was not in a position to interfere with the affairs of Parliamentary Select Committees.

As a result of this deadlock, President Sirisena did not convene the Cabinet meeting last week. This week, however, he has convened the Cabinet meeting amidst severe pressure from within the government against the President's conduct.

The PArliamentary Select Committee probing Easter Sunday attacks will convene this afternoon as well.
