Attorney General Requests Chief Justice To Appoint Three-Member Bench To Hear Case Filed Over Welikada Prison Riots In 2012

The Attorney General has requested the Chief Justice to appoint a three-member bench to hear the case filed over the riots in Welikada prison in 2012.

Riots erupted erupted in Welikada prison when the Police Special Task Force (STF) carried out an operation inside the Welikada Prison in search of drugs and mobile phones.

During the clash between prioners and security forces, 27 inmates died triggering a strong public outcry for investigations.

Former Prisons Commissioner Emil Ranjan Lamahewa and IP Neomal Rangajeewa were previously arrested by the Police over the prison riots.

Both of them were later released on bail.
