Army Intelligence Officer Arrested Over Assault On Senior Journalist Upali Tennakoon: Likely To Be Produced Before Magistrate Today

An officer attached to the military intelligence wing has been arrested over the assault on senior journalist Upali Tennakoon on January 23, 2009.

The officer named Lalith Rajapaksha was attached to the Tripoli Army camp in Maradana at the time of the assault.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) arrested the officer as his fingerprints tallied with those obtained from Tennakoon's vehicle.

Police sources said the suspect would be produced before the Gampaha Magistrate today.

Several members of the military intelligence unit were arrested over te assault on Tennakoon and subsequently released on bail.
