"No Agreement Scheduled To Be Signed With US: Negotiations Are Still Underway And Some Of Their Proposals Not Acceptable To Us": PM In Parliament

The government has not signed an agreement titled SOFA and we have not done anything that could compromise the sovereignty of people and the country, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe saud in Parliament today.

The Prime Minister made this remark while responding to a question raised by JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake this morning.

"No agreement is scheduled to be signed. Negotiations are underway between the relevant Ministryand the US Embassy. Certain proposals are unacceptable to us. We will only agree to what is desirable. At the moment only available agreement is what was signed in 1995," the Prime Minister added.

Commenting on the same matter, State Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardena said that no unfavourable agreement would be signed between the two countries.

"If any agrmnt was to be signed, the President’s advice as the Minister of Defence would be sought and signed thereafter by the Defence Secretary," he added.
