Sri Lankan Man Arrested In New Zealand For A Murder In 2000

A Sri Lankan man who arrived in New Zealand using fake documentation has been arrested for a murder in Switzerland more than 13 years ago.

The 42-year-old man from the central Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn was wanted in Switzerland over the death of his former partner, 23-year-old Kavitha Kandiah, in the Swiss city of Basel on December 13, 2000.

The police have launched an investigation into the missing person’s incident and the investigation was mainly focused around the Auckland area.

The man, a small business operator, is to appear in Auckland District Court on Tuesday.

He had arrived in New Zealand in February 2001 using false ID and travel documents, and was granted New Zealand citizenship in 2004.

Yahoo news reported that New Zealand has no extradition arrangement with Switzerland, where the arrested man lived from 1990 to late 2000.
