EC Says PC Polls Will Precede Presidential Election If Legal Issues Are Resolved: Says It Will Not Lead To Postponement Of Presidential Election

If the legal issues relating to the Provincial council election are resolved by the Supreme Court, the Elections Commission will hold the PC polls before the Presidential election, Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said.

The Chairman said the Provincial Council election would not impede the Presidential election.

According to the Elections Commission Chairman, the Presidential election must take pace before December 08.

Speaking to a private TV station last night, Deshapriya said the conduct of the Elections Commission akin to that of the Fore Brigade.

"When the Fire Brigade is busy dousing a fire in Mattakkuliya, they can't say they cannot attend to a fire that has suddenly erupted in Bambalapitiya. They need to attend to both incidents, with the same care. Similarly, the Elections Commission cannot neglect the Presidential election because it is with preparations for the Provincial Council election," he said.
