Former UPFA Galle Mayor Methsiri De Silva has filed a petition in Supreme Court requesting an order to declare gazette issued calling for Presidential election is illegal on the basis that President Sirisena was elected for 6 years in office.

De Silva's petition seeks to postpone the Presidential election which has already been announced by the Elections Commission.

De Silva, a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, is a supporter of President Maithripala Sirisena.
