India’s AG Says ‘We Will Have To Go To War’ To Take Kachchateevu

The question of retrieving Kachchateevu is a complex issue and India will have to go to war if to take it back, India’s attorney General Mukul Rohatgi has reportedly said recently.

He had made these comments at the recent hearing of the two petitions filed at the Supreme Court by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jeyaram and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on retrieving Kachchateevu.

Sri Lanka’s ownership of the island was assured in 1974 under an international agreement between India and Sri Lanka.

The Supreme Court has reportedly replied stating that it speaks not of war, but peace.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court decided that the fishermen’s issue, which is another lingering issue between the two countries, should be solved by political means as Indian Supreme Court decisions cannot be binding on Sri Lanka.

Mukul Rohatgi is the 14th and current Attorney General of India, who was appointed by the Narendra Modi-led NDA government after the 2014 General Elections. He has been formally appointed as Attorney General of India with effect from 12 June 2014 and shall have a tenure of 3 years. He is a senior advocate at the Supreme Court of India. He has also served earlier as Additional Solicitor General of India.
