Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has launched an internal inquiry into Chief Inspector Nishantha Silva's departure for Switzerland last afternoon.

The investigation has been launched on the basis that Silva has left the country without permission.

Silva was handling several high-profile investigations including the disappearance of Prageeth Ekneligoda, Lasantha Wickrematunga's murder and the abductions of 11 youth.

It is reported that Silva has left the country with his family following the transfer of CID Director Shani Abeysekera.
