The United National Party said it had encountered the greatest setback in its history despite many achievements of the previous government. Issuing a statement, the UNP accepted responsibility for the party's shortcoming which contributed to the election result. The statement said the party would be reorganized and restructured to fade the challenges and they would move forward with defermination and vigour. Speculation is rife that UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe will resign from his position as party leader in the wake of yesterday's results.
