“The unity between the United National Party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and Democratic party is important to form a strong opposition force against the government’s rule”, he said.

In his election rallies, Fonseka also displayed his vehicle which was damaged in a suicide bomb attack launched by the LTTE in 2006 when he was the Army Commander. Fonseka too was severely injured due to the attack and received extensive medical treatment for over three months.

The former Army Chief pointed out that all three opposition parties have a common objective which is to overthrow the Government as soon as possible!

“Over 95 percent of the country is suffering from poverty and the so called ‘miracles’ (aashcharya) are for the other five percent who can afford ‘miracles’. The so called ‘miracle’ is nothing but an illusion for those who are in need”, he said addressing the rally.

Sarath Fonseka also said that when compared to the other developing countries in the world, Sri Lanka is stepping backwards and that the country’s economy is in disarray.

During his speech Sarath Fonseka highly criticized the rule of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and expressed his concerns over the rising election violence in Moneragala area.
