September 18, 2014

Multiple sources confirmed that a tense situation  has arisen in Badulla as a personal dispute between a Sinhala group and a Muslim group has blown out of proportion.

The clash had occurred yesterday following a musical show in the Badulla town. Reports from Badulla confirmed that the clash had started when a group of Muslim youth had allegedly assaulted a Sinhala youth during the musical show.

As a result, another Sinhala group had attacked several shops in the Badulla town as an act of retaliation. Sources from Badulla said it started as a personal dispute and the issue was escalating in the absence of law enforcement mechanism. Eye witnesses said Badulla Masjid, a Muslim School and two shops owned by Muslims had been pelted with stones last night.

It is learnt that several ruling party politicians who are in Badulla at the moment has requested President Mahinda Rajapaksa to intervene in the matter and take speedy action to control the situation. The unexpected development had taken place just two days ahead of the Uva Provincial Council election.

When contacted by Asian Mirror, the Police Media Unit said it was unaware of any such issue in Badulla.
