"What Happened In North Was Nothing But Genocide Of Tamils" - Sumanthiran

Parliamentarian of the Tamil National Alliance M.A. Sumanthiran has stated that what happened in the North during the final phase of war was nothing but  genocide of Tamils.

We are not scared to express our stance. It is genocide. We neither deny the fact that what has happened in the Tamils’ homeland is genocide,” Sumanthiran said speaking to reporters in Jaffna yesterday.

However, Sumanthiran has also asserted that the TNA does not want to undermine the ongoing UN investigation into the alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka by talking only about the genocide of Tamils.

He made these remarks when journalists queried him over a statement made by TNA PC member M. K. Sivajilingam, who is trying to bring a resolution at the Northern Provincial Council on what he terms as the genocide of Tamil at the NPC.

While responding to the remarks made by the President, he also said that the TNA has never demanded the creation of a Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka. Sumanthiran added that the President’s remark might create a misunderstanding between the Sinhalese and Tamil ethnicities in Sri Lanka.

The TNA Parliamentarian said that the government should explain as to why there was a delay in distributing gold among the people of the North. During his recent visit to Jaffna, President Mahinda Rajapaksa returned the gold, which was in the possession of the terrorist group LTTE during their reign, to its rightful owners.

However, Sumanthiran did not disclose whether it would support the United Nationl Party at the forthcoming presidential election.
