Karunanidhi Says Narcotics Case Against Indian Fishermen Was Foisted

DMK president M Karunanidhi today said that the narcotics case against five Indian fishermen sentenced to death by a Sri Lankan court for drug trafficking was a "foisted" one, Indian media reported. He has also urged the Central Government to take up the matter with Colombo to pave way for their release.

Karunanidhi has said that India had already made it clear that New Delhi does not consider them guilty and therefore it would take all legal and diplomatic steps for their release.

"Since the fishermen have been allowed time till November 14 for appeal in Supreme Court, the Centre should immediately contact Sri Lankan government and pave the way for the release of the convicted fishermen," Karunanidhi said in a statement.

The DMK president recalled that after the five fishermen were arrested in 2011 on charges of drug trafficking, Tamil Nadu police Q branch and Intelligence department had submitted reports that the case was "foisted" against the five.

The DMK leader said that his daughter Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi, had taken up the matter in the Upper House during the UPA regime and then External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid had assured of steps for protecting them. “But there had been no sustained efforts by the Centre after that" following which they have given capital punishment, Karunanidhi has said, OutlookIndia reported.

Pointing out at the unrest among fishermen in Tamil Nadu, he also said all the arrested fishermen were below 45 years of age with one of them aged 19 and expressed concern over the future of their families following the verdict.

The five fishermen, all hailing from Tamil Nadu, were apprehended in 2011 by the Sri Lankan Navy on charges of smuggling of drugs in the seas off northern Jaffna's Delft islet.
