'My Son Is In Remand Because Govt Does Not Interfere With Judiciary' : Mervyn

Public Relations Minister Mervyn Silva stated yesterday that the government was not interfering with the police and the judiciary.

Speaking at the opening of the Presidential Election operations office of the UPFA at Modera, he asked how his son Malaka Silva may be in remand custody for 16 days for the alleged assault of a foreigner if the government was interfering with the police and the judiciary.

The Minister made these remarks in the presence of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa who is also yjr District Leader of Gampaha. 

Malaka Silva has been in remand custory from November 1 and his bail applications were rejected twice! Before he was arrwsted, the controversial Minister attempted to take his son to Singapore for further treatment. 

However, Malaka Silva's name was mentioned in connection with a number of controversies in the recent past. Last year, he was assaulted by an unidentified group at the car park of Odel over an incident involving a girl.

Before that, he allegedly assaulted an Army officer inside a hotel premises in Colombo and the latter sustained head injuries. However, no action was taken against the Minister’s Son.
