Mathews Responds To Aluthgamage: Says Captain Cannot Spy On Players

November 21, 2014

Sri Lanka cricket captain Angelo Mathews responded to the allegation put forward by the Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage that the younger players of the team are not performing since they spend time on social media networks such as Facebook without getting proper sleep.

However, Mathews replied that all players were adults and they were given their own rooms. ‘No one peep in to these rooms to check on what the players are doing’, he added. Neither the captain nor the management do such things, he added.

Aluthgamage had said that in earlier days, cricketers were committed to their game, and obtained the necessary practice, food and sleep accordingly. However, the younger players are addicted to the social media and other diversions.

The Sports Minister made this statement in relevance to the failure the Sri Lanka Cricket Team suffered during the Indian tour, where the young Indian team led by Virat Kohli white washed the series 5-0.

Aluthgamage maintained that he has been informed by the Chairman of the Selection Committee that players on tours are awake in their rooms even after midnight, surfing Facebook.
