National Government- Abolishing Executive Presidency -17A To Be Key Elements Of Opposition MOU

Forming a national government for a period of 100 days, abolition of Executive Presidency, introducing a new electoral system and setting up of independent commissions under the 17th Amendment will be key elements of the Memorandum of Understanding that will be signed between the parties of the common opposition tomorrow.

Speaking to Asian Mirror today, a spokesman of the common opposition said that the MOU will be a framework within which all the parties of the opposition can work together before and after the next presidential election.

He added that the MOU would clear the air on many questions that presently exist pertaining to the abolition of Executive Presidency.

The MOU, according to him, will be implemented by the new government, led by Maithripala Sirisena, within 100 days after coming to power.

According to sources of the common opposition, 36 political parties and civil organizations will sign the Memorandum of Understanding at Viharamahadevi Park, tomorrow morning.

 

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Parliamentarian Arjuna Ranatunga, Mano Ganesan, Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera, Girambe Ananda Thera, Athuraliye Rathana Thera, Thiniawala Palitha Thera and representatives of several other organizations will also attend the event.
