Anura Kumara Says JVP Will Contest General Election As A New Front

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that his party is planning to contest the upcoming General Election as a part of a broad New Front.

Speaking at a political talk show on Hiru TV last evening, he said that this front will not be an alliance of political parties in the normal sense.

Dissanayake said that there were many intellectuals and other people who are not part of any political party but want the political system to change. He added that they were opening their voices in the relatively free atmosphere after the defeat of Mahinda Rajapaksa. The JVP plans to join with such people to push for a better political culture, Dissanayake added.

He also stated that if the formation of such a front is unsuccessful, the JVP will contest alone in the election.

Dissanayake also said that the JVP has won a lot of respect even though it has still not been able to transform it into votes. This wil be one challenge of the party, he added.

According to the 100 Days Program of the Maithripala Sirisena government, parliament is scheduled to be dissolved on April 23 after the successful completion of constitutional reforms.
