“ Weerawansa Destroyed Mahinda Rajapaksa” – Prime Minister

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, in his first speech in Parliament after assuming duties under the new government, accused Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa of ‘destroying’ former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

He also urged Weerawansa not to spread hatred and "communalism" anymore.

Wickremesinghe appealed everybody to unite to empower and strengthen the parliament, which was neglected by former regime which was fully controlled by the Executive President.

The Prime Minister also pledged the Parliament to introduce constitutional amendments that would curtail the powers of Executive Presidency.

He also stated that the new government would introduce independent commissions while implementing a political solution based on the 13th Amendment. However, the Prime Minister said, the unitary status of the country's constitution will be maintained.

“Lichchavi system, mentioned by Lord Buddha as a commendable way of governance, will be implemented in Parliament under President Maithripala Sirisena’s government,” the Prime Minister added.

Meanwhile, Nimal Siripala de Silva, the new Leader of the Opposition speaking in Parliament, said the House is ready to meet even every day of the week to support the 100 day programme of President Maithripala Sirisena.

JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake also added that the party would support any constitutional amendment that would strengthen democracy in the country. The JVP Leader further stated that his party will fully support the right to information act.
