Magistrate Rejects Motion: Thewarapperuma To Remain In Remand

Colombo Chief Magistrate today rejected UNP Parliamentarian Palitha Thewarapperuma’s motion requesting bail.

The UNP Parliamentarian was earlier remanded until February 2 over charges of making opposition PS Member Murugan Pushpakumara kneel in public and attacking a political meeting of the opposition.

Thewarapperuma's unruly behavior was captured on a video footage which was released to media by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

Police complaints were lodged with regard to the incident by former Minister and UPFA Parliamentarian Mahinda Samarasinghe.

Following the charges and subsequent media pressure, the UNP Parliamentarian surrendered to police on January 21.
