Fonseka Now A Four Star General With Medals And Civic Rights

The Ministry of Defence today (28) restored the rank of Four Star General, all medals and privileges of former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka.

The former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka was fully pardoned by President Maithripala Sirisena on January 21.

His civic rights, of which he was deprived following his imprisonment, were also restored by the new government today.

President Maithripala Sirisena ordered the authorities to drop all charges filed against the former Army Commander and granted Fonseka a full Presidential Pardon.

In 2010, Sarath Fonseka was sentenced by a military court to 30 months in jail and denied his political rights for ‘irregular procurements’ during his time in charge of the army.

In his election manifesto, President Sirisena promised to reinstate all military ranks of the former Army Commander who led the final Eelam war against the LTTE.
