Former Minister and NFF Leader Wimal Weerawansa's wife Shashi Weerawansa has been arrested by Police a short while ago, Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana confirmed.

Shashi Weerawansa has been arrested at the Neville Fernando Private Hospital in Malabe.

She had admitted herself to the private hospital after the arrest warrant was issued.

She has been arrested over the charges of obtaining a diplomatic passport in an illegal manner, after providing forged documents.

Sashi Weerawansa is alleged to have obtained diplomatic and general passports by submitting birth certificate with forged names and dates of birth. She had applied for a diplomatic passport in 2010 by submitting false personal information which was different to what appears in her previous normal passport that expired on May 24, 2009.

At a rally held in Nugegoda on Wednesday (Feb 18) to support former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, former minister questioned as to why the police are delaying the arrest of his wife and challenged that they were awaiting the police.
