Presidential Commission To Probe Abductions Will Commence Hearings From Today

Presidential Commission appointed to hold investigations about abductions and disappearances of persons in the Northern and Eastern Provinces during the period between 1990 and 2009 will commence its hearings from today.

The Secretary of the commission H.W Gunadasa said that the hearings will take place at the Kuchchaveli Divisional Secretariat in the Trincomalee District.

The Commission held its first public hearings in Kilinochchi district from January 18– 21 and second public hearings in Jaffna from February 14-17.

The Commission has received about 13,700 complaints from all parts of the country and the secretary said that the commission received the highest number of complaints from Jaffna.

An interim report will be handed over to the President by the end of next month. A website will also be launched soon by the Commission with the aim of facilitating complainants to access information regarding status of their complaints.
